- Description
- This chapter focuses on saltmarsh restoration efforts on Area E of Kooragang Island, a wetland that provides important supplementary shorebird roosting habitat for the Hunter estuary migratory shorebird population and is undergoing mangrove encroachment. The present research aims at establishing relationships between roost habitat, estuarine vegetation distribution and tidal hydrodynamics in order to guide restoration efforts. The methodology consisted of a combination of field data collection, laboratory experiments, statistical analysis and numerical hydrodynamic simulation. The role of biotic factors, although important in defining the landward limit of estuarine wetlands and the zonation of individual species within the wetland mosaic, is secondary to the influence of tidal hydrodynamics and topography in determination of broad community boundaries in these wetlands. One of the primary objectives of this research was to develop management recommendations regarding the hydraulic conditions required to develop and maintain shorebird habitat at Area E.
